Hair Retrospectives: The Products

The first few months with my new natural hair was a natural disaster. My hair was dry, frizzy and unmanageable, refusing to submit to any concoction of conditioners and creams. The harder I tried (to tame), the worse it acted. Fortunately, things improved with time. Below is a list of my non-negotiable-must-haves. Without these, my natural hair is a natural no-no. May these product recommendations lead you into greater hair joy and peace, reducing your desire to reach for the creamy crack!

  1. Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner- I’ve used many great conditioners for my naturally dry hair, but this one takes the cake. It’s vegan (no animal products) and contains organic Shea Butter, Aloe Vera and Honeysuckle oil. This conditioner makes detangling a breeze, and keeps your hair soft all day (that’s why it made my list). This product is worth every penny!http://tinyurl.com/25uw8qm
  2. Smooth ‘n Shine Hair Polisher- After conditioning, I use this serum to smooth down the hair cuticle and continue detangling. It adds shine and makes even the thickest hair easy to comb. Purchased at Sally’s Beauty Supply
  3. Shea Butter- Kinky curly hair requires more than casual conditioning to remain tame. When my hair’s natural I wet it daily. Because of this, it’s easier to dry it out. Shea butter is rich and penetrates deep into the hair shaft to provide moisture balance throughout the week. A little everyday goes a long way. http://www.butters-n-bars.com/
  4. Kinky-Curly Curling Custard- As a final step, I use Kinky-Curly to seal in moisture and give me some curl definition. Now, using this product won’t give a 4a/b person 3a/b hair. But, what it will do is lock moisture (the Aubrey Organics and Shea) in your hair, prevent frizz, and help your hair to dry smoothly with a “wet look”. Without this stuff, my hair is a fuzz ball by noon. Can be purchased at Target
